What a great time to become our new, 49th, Commodore. The Westhampton Yacht Squadron is financially sound, we have a membership that has remained steady through some tough times, and we have a Board of hard working people that meet once a month to keep us on track. Of course there is always room for improvement. Our buildings have a few years on them and need to be maintained. Our pool, docks, decks and tennis court, lawns, parking lot and beach most be constantly be attended to. The Board of Directors is now putting together a list of projects for this winter. The first thing we all agreed on is replacing the porch deck and railings on the south side of the main clubhouse.
First and foremost we are a sailing club. Although I am not a good sailor, more like movable ballast on a windy day. I am a U.S. Sailing Certified Club Race Officer. This is one way of contributing to the sailing races we hold at our club virtually every Saturday in the summer and six Sundays during the fall series. Volunteers are the backbone of club racing. We always need help on the committee boat, on mark set boats to set out the race course, on safety boats to rescue sailors from overturned boats, or to provide food to the wet, cold, tired sailors after the fall series. One example of just how important volunteers are is one recent Sunday at the fall series we had two race courses set up. The Sunfish, 420’s and Lasers we set up by Harts Cove and the Optimist by the club. It was cloudy with lots of sun, wind and waves. About 20 Optis came off the beach 17 finished the race, 11 finished the second race, and only eight finished the third race. Volunteers with boats from our club and visiting clubs worked hard and did an outstanding job with the young Opti sailors and swamped boats. All were safe because of the great volunteers. Please think about volunteering next year. And for the big payoff all volunteers get one free drink at the club after the races.
See you at the Club
